Remembering Patricia Peterson, businesswoman and philanthropist

The University of Oregon is mourning the passing and celebrating the life of one of our most avid and prolific supporters, accomplished businesswoman and philanthropist, Patricia Peterson, who died March 10, 2024, at her home in Portland. She was 97.

Born in Portland, Peterson earned her degree in economics from the University of Washington. She married Ron Peterson (BS ’49 Accounting) in 1952 and together they founded Peterson Properties, a real estate investment and management company, in 1955. They built their wealth in commercial properties but never forgot where they came from, eager to “pass on our rewards” to scholarships, the unhoused, and the elderly through local organizations including Providence St. Vincent Medical Foundation, the American Red Cross Oregon Trail Chapter, William Temple House, the Oregon Humane Society, the Oregon Zoo, and Meals on Wheels.

The Petersons’ 2002 gift to the Lundquist College of Business, Presidential Scholarships, and athletics was the second-largest in UO history at the time. Peterson Hall in the Lillis Business Complex and Peterson Plaza at Autzen Stadium were named to recognize their generosity.

“Patricia’s spirit fills the halls of the Lundquist College of Business, and every area on campus that her generosity touched,” said Bruce Blonigen, Edward Maletis Dean of the Lundquist College. “Patricia was an incredible supporter of our students. The impact of her contributions to spaces and scholarships will continue to be felt for generations of students.”

The Petersons gave generously for many years, mostly in support of the School of Accounting at the Lundquist College and Presidential Scholarships. Other areas of support include Lundquist College faculty, the Honors College, and the Lundquist College’s Portland programs.

“Patricia leaves an incredible legacy of giving to the University of Oregon that spanned more than three decades and impacted many areas of the university,” said Karl Scholz, president of the University of Oregon. “We are grateful for Petersons’ generosity and will remember fondly their efforts and hard work to improve our community.”

Ron preceded Patricia in death in 2016. Patricia is survived by their children Nancy and Jim (BARC ’79), two grandchildren, and one great grandson.
