Are we measuring what actually matters, or just what’s easy to count?

Join Data Services for a sharp, no-nonsense discussion of Jerry Z. Muller’s The Tyranny of Metrics. We’re taking a hard look at "metric fixation", the dangerous belief that everything can and should be quantified.

From higher education to healthcare to corporate management, Muller argues that our obsession with performance indicators, dashboards, and standardized data is actively making our institutions worse. Instead of improving efficiency, it encourages people to game the system rather than do their actual jobs.

What’s on the table:

  • The Trap of Quantification: Why throwing data at a problem often creates a worse one.
  • The Reality Check: A skeptical look at when metrics actually work, and when they fail spectacularly.
  • The Discussion: Bring your frustrations, your insights, and your critiques. Expect an honest, unfiltered conversation about the very real limits of data-driven decision-making.

Open to all students, faculty, and staff. e-book editions are available through the library.

Portfolio Building with Notion
October 28
2:00–3:30 p.m.

Create a clean, compelling online portfolio that showcases your work. Whether you're preparing for internships, launching a job search, or building your professional presence, a strong portfolio helps you stand out. In this hands-on, one-day workshop, you'll learn how to design and assemble an online portfolio using Notion, a flexible, user friendly tool that makes it easy to present your achievements, projects, and experiences in a polished way.

Participants will explore Notion's essential features, learn about how to effectively use Notion blocks, and structure information in various ways to customize your portfolio. By the end of the session, you'll walk away with a functional portfolio that you can continue to refine and build on. You'll also be exposed to all the other ways you can use Notion in the future.

You'll learn to:

  • Navigate and personalize your user interface
  • Use core Notion shortcuts for better workflow
  • Create, organize, and design portfolio pages
  • Present and organize information clearly
  • Take advantage of Notion beyond portfolio creation

This workshop is designed for students at any stage, whether you're starting from scratch or refreshing a portfolio you already have. No prior Notion experience is necessary.

Request a Workshop

  • Who can request a workshop: UO student groups, instructors (for a class), and faculty or staff departments. Open to all majors and all experience levels.
  • Cost: None.
  • Format: In-person and hands-on. Attendees follow along on a computer.
  • Location: The CoLAB, or the requesting group's own space.
  • Group size: 4 to 24 people.
  • Lead time: Requests must be submitted at least two weeks before the session date.
  • Facilitated by: Professional Edge peer trainers.
  • Materials: Workshop materials are shared with attendees through Canvas as part of the workshop. They are not available separately.

Available Workshops

  • Work Smarter Not Harder: Word* (60 minutes) – For anyone who writes long documents and loses time to formatting and version confusion. Attendees practice structuring a document so it stays organized as it grows, working through edits with other people, and polishing writing before it goes out.
  • Work Smarter Not Harder: Excel* (60 minutes) – For people who have a spreadsheet and aren't sure what to do with it. Attendees take a realistic dataset from messy to usable, pull findings out of it, and move the results into a report.
  • Work Smarter Not Harder: PowerPoint* (60 minutes) – For anyone with a presentation coming up who does not want to spend a weekend on slides. Attendees practice building clean slides quickly, keeping a deck visually consistent, and using the tools that help on presentation day.
  • Work Smarter Not Harder: Teams* (60 minutes) – For groups that have Teams but only use it for chat. Attendees set up a workspace the way an organization would, collaborate on shared files, and run a meeting together, all from their own laptops in a live Teams session.
  • Notion (90 minutes) – Attendees leave with a live portfolio page they can share the same day. The session covers building the page, adding work to it, and publishing it to the web. A good fit for groups preparing for job or internship searches.

*Work Smarter Not Harder is the name of the Microsoft 365 workshop series. The four sessions are independent, so a group can request one or all of them.

How to Request a Workshop

  1. Choose a workshop and a time on the Professional Edge booking page.
  2. Answer a few short questions about the group: group or class name; your role; how many people you expect; and where you would like the session held.
  3. You will get a confirmation email right away.
  4. Professional Edge confirms the room within two business days. If the space is not available at that time, we will reach out to reschedule.
