Professional Edge Immersions connect you directly with industry partners to solve real business challenges. Through a combination of hands-on project work, technical training, mentorship, and site visits, you'll gain professional experience, develop in-demand skills, and build a portfolio that stands out to future employers.

Each immersion is industry-informed and designed to mirror the kinds of challenges professionals face today—giving you the opportunity to apply your skills in a real-world context while still in school. Students who successfully complete an immersion can earn an applied-level microcredential, verifying their ability to use these skills in practical, professional settings.

Who can apply for an immersion?

Most immersions are open to all current University of Oregon undergraduate and graduate students from any major. Some specialized immersions may have prerequisites, such as specific courses that need to be completed to participate, which will be noted in the program description.

Do I need prior technical experience?

Not necessarily! Many immersions are designed for learners with a range of experience levels and will provide the training needed. However, some programs may recommend or require familiarity with specific tools or concepts, details of which will be listed in the immersion description.

How much time does an immersion take?

Each immersion has its own cadence. Most immersions run for seven weeks of the term and require approximately eight to ten hours of work per week, including group meetings, office hours, and independent or group project work. Is there a cost to participate?

Professional Edge immersions are free for students.

Will I earn a microcredential?

Yes! Participants who successfully complete immersion requirements will earn one or more microcredentials, issued as verified digital badges through Canvas Credentials, to showcase their new skills and experience.

What kinds of skills will I develop?

Skill development varies by immersion, but common areas include:

  • Industry-specific technical skills (e.g., data analysis, marketing strategy, business operations)
  • Professional communication and presentation skills
  • Strategic problem-solving and critical thinking
  • Teamwork and project management
