Why make this change now?
Ever since 1985, when the program first began, our top priority has been to serve the needs of the region’s leading professionals. But just as the texture and pace of the contemporary workplace have evolved over the years, so too have the needs of our student body.
During the past few years, many current and prospective students have told us that the demands of an always-on work environment make it a significant challenge to spend the two full Fridays away from work the program’s schedule currently requires.
We’ve also heard from many prospective students whose complex business travel itineraries make it impossible for them to take on the current once-a-week class schedule.
Our current and prospective students are not alone in experiencing these challenges. All around the nation, leading executive MBA programs are in the process of updating—or have already updated—their class schedules to better meet the needs of today’s business leaders.
After listening closely to our core audience and looking carefully at the different ways in which programs similar to ours have updated their schedules, we concluded that the twice-monthly class format outlined above is the one that will enable us to best serve our students in the decades to come.
How will the new schedule make it more convenient for the Pacific Northwest’s leading professionals to take advantage of the Oregon Executive MBA’s offerings?
Here are just a few of the ways the new schedule will make it more convenient for top-tier professionals to take part in the program.
- Starting class in the afternoon on Fridays gives students the option to spend the morning as they choose. They can use their Friday mornings to concentrate on their work responsibilities, to travel to the program, or focus on any of their other priorities.
- Finishing Friday classes in the early evening means lighter traffic for students who travel home after class.
- Frequent business travelers will find the twice-a-month class schedule easier to integrate into their travel schedules.
- For students from the extended region—Seattle, Boise, Central and Southern Oregon, the San Francisco Bay Area, and beyond—the twice-a-month schedule will make it more practical to pursue their executive MBA degrees here in Portland through the University of Oregon.
How will the new schedule make it easier for those students who need to get buy-in for the program from their employers?
The streamlined Friday schedule means fewer hours away from the workplace during standard business hours. In fact, because classes don’t start until after lunch on Fridays, the total time spent in class during regular working hours amounts to just eight hours per month.
Will the program still cover the same material?
Absolutely. Though the condensed Friday schedule means that total class time per month will go from 32 to 28 hours, teaching faculty will provide additional course material—video lectures, online discussion sections, take-home case studies, and the like—to keep students engaged during the period between class sessions.
What are some of the other executive MBA programs that have switched to similar schedules?
All over the U.S., many nationally known programs have adopted similar schedules. The executive MBA programs offered by the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, and Smeal College of Business at Penn State are just a few these.
Do any other executive MBA programs in the Pacific Northwest offer a similar twice-monthly schedule?
No. The Oregon Executive MBA is the only program in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho to offer this convenient class schedule to the region’s mid- to senior-level professionals.
Will the program continue to provide the same concierge-style services it does today?
Absolutely. Since the program first started in 1985, our concierge-style services have been a distinctive feature of the Oregon Executive MBA. We know how busy top-tier professionals are, so we make it as convenient as possible for our students to focus on their studies by providing catered meals on class days, all textbooks and study materials, computer software for specific courses, and more.
Will the program continue to offer the Global Study Trip?
You bet. Now more than ever, a global perspective is a crucial attribute for today’s business leaders. The required Global Study Trip, undertaken right before the students’ second year in the program, is an ideal opportunity to learn about the intricacies of doing business in an international environment
Are there any other changes that executive MBA students can expect in fall 2016?
Yes, another exciting change is in the works. Starting in September 2016, all Oregon Executive MBA classes will take place in our new quarters in Portland’s Old Town Chinatown.
