The Tyranny of Metrics (Data and Society Book Club)
October 9–November 6
noon
Knight Library Data Services Help Desk

Are we measuring what actually matters, or just what’s easy to count?

Join Data Services for a sharp, no-nonsense discussion of Jerry Z. Muller’s The Tyranny of Metrics. We’re taking a hard look at "metric fixation", the dangerous belief that everything can and should be quantified.

From higher education to healthcare to corporate management, Muller argues that our obsession with performance indicators, dashboards, and standardized data is actively making our institutions worse. Instead of improving efficiency, it encourages people to game the system rather than do their actual jobs.

What’s on the table:

  • The Trap of Quantification: Why throwing data at a problem often creates a worse one.
  • The Reality Check: A skeptical look at when metrics actually work, and when they fail spectacularly.
  • The Discussion: Bring your frustrations, your insights, and your critiques. Expect an honest, unfiltered conversation about the very real limits of data-driven decision-making.

Open to all students, faculty, and staff. e-book editions are available through the library.

Lead with empathy, clarity, and confidence, especially when you're leading peers. Aspiring leaders in student-run organizations and future workplaces are equipped with the skills and frameworks to lead authentically, navigate real leadership pressure, and stay grounded in their values. During this interactive, two-session Professional Edge training, you'll move beyond leadership theory and practice what it actually looks like to listen well, make decisions others can trust, delegate effectively, and build relationships with stakeholders who shape your organization's success.

This training is ideal for students who are stepping into leadership in student organizations, navigating the shift from peer to leader, or preparing to enter the workforce with stronger communication, decision-making, and relationship-building skills.

What You'll Gain

  • Earn a marketable skills microcredential: Advance your professional toolkit by earning a microcredential from the Lundquist College of Business, digital proof of skill development that you can share on LinkedIn and include in applications.
  • Define your leadership identity: Complete a leadership values workflow and craft a personal leadership statement you can use as a compass in future leadership moments.
  • Practice active listening and empathy in real time: Build habits that make people feel heard and understood and learn how to reduce misunderstanding, defensiveness, and conflict through stronger listening skills.
  • Strengthen decision-making, delegation, and dissent skills: Work through practical tools for inclusive decision-making, managing disagreement productively, and delegating in a way that builds capacity in others.
  • Build stakeholder strategy and relationship skills: Create a stakeholder and empathy map and complete a guided stakeholder conversation reflection, so you can lead beyond your inner circle and build support for your work.
  • Practical application: Participate in interactive discussions, scenario analyses, and practice that provide real-world context and application of the skills learned.

Schedule

"You Don't Need a Unicorn to Be Your Own Boss!"

Forget the pitch decks, the Series A, and the pressure to build the next billion-dollar app. Most successful businesses in America never take a dime of venture capital. They're bootstrapped, bought, inherited, or built one customer at a time.

In partnership with Oregon Founders Club, Mohr Career Services, and the Lundquist Center for Entrepreneurship, come hear from founders and small business owners who took the other road: buying an existing business, growing through revenue, franchising, or turning a side hustle into a real living. Bring your questions. Leave with a clearer picture of what building something of your own actually looks like.
