Cornelis A. 'Kees' de Kluyver is the James and Shirley Rippey Distinguished Professor at the Lundquist College of Business. He was formerly the dean of the Lundquist College from 2010-2015. Prior to joining the college, de Kluyver was the Masatoshi Ito Professor of Management and a former dean at the Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management at Claremont Graduate University. He also holds an appointment as Visiting Professor of Strategy at the Nyenrode Business University in the Netherlands.
His professional experience includes more than thirty years in academe and management consulting. From 1991-1994, he served as dean and professor of management at George Mason University's School of Management in Fairfax, Virginia, and earlier in his career, he was a partner with Cresap Management Consultants, a Towers Perrin Company, in the firm's strategy and organizational effectiveness practice. In this position, he served a wide range of clients in the high technology and service industries on a range of strategy issues including the globalization of multinational operations. Client companies included AB Vassilopoulous (Greece), AZKO (The Netherlands), Flour, American Home Products, Hewlett-Packard, Allen Bradley, Rockwell Collins, AT&T, Dow Corning, Ciba Geigy, and Allied Corp.
His academic career includes appointments as professor of business administration as the Colgate Darden Graduate School of Management at the University of Virginia; as associate professor of management at the Krannert Graduate School of Management at Purdue University; and as senior lecturer in operations research at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. He has taught executive courses at St. Peter's College, Oxford University (United Kingdom); at the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa); and at St George's University (Grenada). He is a frequent speaker to professional audiences, and holds a PhD in operations research from Case Western Reserve, an MBA from the University of Oregon, and undergraduate degrees from the University of Oregon and Nyenrode Business University in the Netherlands.
Dr. de Kluyver's areas of research include global strategy and corporate governance. He has published extensively in the areas of operations research, marketing, and strategic management, and his writings can be found in such journals as Management Science, The Journal of Marketing Research, The European Journal of Operational Research, The Sloan Management Review, and Long Range Planning. His third book, Strategy: A View from the Top (with John A. Pearce II, published by Prentice Hall, 2008), is in its third edition and has been translated in Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. His books are A Primer on Corporate Governance (Business Expert Press, 2009) and Fundamentals of Global Strategy: A Business Model Approach (Business Expert Press, 2010)
Dr. de Kluyver was a member of the first Blue Ribbon Commission on Executive Compensation convened by the National Association Of Securities Dealers, which focused on developing standards for stock option grants. He was also a senior advisor to Institutional Investor, Inc., which deals with governance issues in the asset management industry. He continues to be an advisor to and serve on a number of corporate and philanthropic boards. Current and past governance clients include Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, and a number of foundations and local nonprofit organizations.
