SPM Reflections: Sasha Chaplin

Sasha Chaplin, MS '18 competed in Division I basketball for six years while receiving her bachelor’s degree in informatics and a master’s degree in human-computer interaction design at Indiana University. She worked as a user experience architect for a few years before joining the Sports Product Management program in fall 2016. While in the program, she worked on a product creation team focused on an after-training shoe. Chaplin spent the summer of 2017 as a youth footwear product intern for Under Armour, which offered her a full-time position by the end of that summer.

Why did you choose the University of Oregon Sports Product Management Program?

I wanted be a part of the industry that influenced me as I was growing up. I always had a passion for footwear and helping others. I wanted to combine both passions to be a part of the sports industry to create products for others.

What was your favorite part of the program?

My favorite part of the program was learning from people who had a great amount of experience in the industry, as well as building relationships with everyone that I was blessed and fortunate to meet while in the program.

What are you doing now?

I am currently an associate product line manager in sportstyle footwear at Under Armour in Portland, Oregon.

Do you have any advice for candidates?

For those who are interested in being a part of the program, be ready to learn and grow through the experiences that you will go through daily. You will have the opportunity to learn from great people as well as be challenged by them. Be open to perspectives that are different than your own—after all, you want to be a part of an industry that is globally impactful and represented. Lastly, enjoy the journey and remember to leave a lasting impression during your time in the program.
