Global Context and Cultural Awareness for Business Decisions Requirements

All business administration and accounting majors are required to fulfill either the global context requirement (if admitted to the business administration or accounting majors prior to fall 2024) or the cultural awareness for business decisions requirement (if admitted to the business administration or accounting majors fall 2024 or later) as part of their major coursework.

Students required to complete the global context requirement but interested in pursuing the cultural awareness for business decisions requirement instead should speak with an advisor, as it will impact other major requirements.

Global Context Requirement

For students admitted to the business administration or accounting majors prior to fall 2024

Students can fulfill the global context requirement in one of the following ways:

  1. Study Abroad or Qualifying Overseas Military Deployment – Students who study abroad in one country for six weeks or more may have all or part of the global context requirement waived with academic advisor approval. International internships of six weeks or longer may also waive part of the global context requirement if pre-approved by an academic advisor. UO's study abroad programs can be found on the Global Education Oregon (GEO) website.

Students that have been deployed overseas as part of military service may also qualify to have their global context requirement waived. Please speak to an academic advisor for more information.

  2. Study a Language – Foreign language courses must be at least 200-level or higher to meet the global context requirement.
  3. Study Another Region of the World – Global context requires that students take three courses that focus on the culture of a region that does not include their native region. All three courses should focus on the same region and be at least three credits each.

The following lists of courses within regions are available to assist students in choosing an area of study and specific classes to fulfill this requirement.

Once you have completed your global context requirement, fill out our approval form to have it added to your Ducks on Track.

Cultural Awareness for Business Decisions Requirement

For students admitted to the business administration or accounting majors fall 2024 or later

Students who study abroad or intern for credit in one country for six weeks or more may have the cultural awareness requirement waived with the approval of an academic advisor. Students that have been deployed overseas as part of military service and international students attending UO on a student visa may qualify to have their cultural awareness requirement waived. Please speak to an academic advisor for more information.

Students cannot apply courses to both the upper-division business elective requirement and the cultural awareness requirement.
