Sherlyn Koh came to the University of Oregon from Singapore. She brought an undergraduate degree in sport science and management, along with strong coaching and event management experience. Her dream entering the Sports Product Management (SPM) program was to end up working in global football (soccer). Koh's dream quickly became a reality as she did her summer internship at Under Amour USA in Global Football Product Line Management. We asked her to share some of her thoughts as she nears completion of the degree this spring.
Why did you choose the University of Oregon's Sports Product Management Program?
I had a strong interest in sports products and in comparing the SPM program with other master's degrees, I found it to be the most comprehensive and extensive in helping me understand all aspects of the product creation process. Also, I was impressed with the connections it has to sports product companies.
How did SPM exceed your expectations?
The SPM program arranged many learning activities beyond the classroom, which helped maximize my learnings and enhance my experiences. These included hands-on learning, workshops, company visits, and domestic and international trips.
What role did SPM play in helping you secure your summer internship position with Under Armour?
The internship program at Under Armour is really competitive as they only accept 100 interns from over 10,000 applications. SPM played an important role in introducing me to the University Recruiting Team at Under Armour.
What do you wish you had known when you were considering master's degree programs?
I wish I had known the importance of having an industry mentor when I was considering master's degree programs. The SPM program paired me up with an industry mentor and I've loved having him as someone I can look up to and turn to. He has not only guided and developed me as a professional but as a person as well. It's great having someone who is genuinely concerned about my growth.
What percentage increase do you expect in your salary due to the SPM degree?
Over 100%.
Is there anything else you'd like to share with prospective SPM applicants?
The SPM program is very unique and interesting because the set-up allows you to immerse into the different aspects of the sports product creation process while also having you put what you learn into practice.
