MBA Application Tips and Tricks

MBA Application Tips and Tricks

Considering applying to the Oregon MBA or another MBA program? We can help you best prepare your application materials with our popular free webinar "Oregon MBA: 5 Application Mistakes and How to Avoid Them."

Here are just a few tips from the online webinar hosted by our associate director for MBA recruiting Paul Allen:

Tip 1
Know the Deadlines and Prepare in Advance

Before you begin your application, familiarize yourself with the deadlines for all the schools to which you want to apply. Then, plan and schedule your own deadlines for each part of the application. Some items will take longer than you expect. Remember: those who apply late reduce their chances of being admitted—and may lose out on potential scholarships.

Tip 2
Follow the Rules (But Be Creative)

It's okay (and encouraged) to be creative with your application, but follow the rules. This is especially true for the essay. Don't be too short or too long with your essay question answers. Find out the specific requirements for content, length, and format, and stick to them. If the school asks for a PDF of your resume, don't send a JPG or Word document. The same goes for cover letters and resumes. Remember: schools require these documents to get to know candidates. Make it easy for them to do so.

Tip 3
Be Prepared

Many schools require GMAT or GRE test scores. Check which test is required for the program and then allow yourself six to eight weeks of intense studying and preparing for the test. Likewise, get to know the school to which you are applying, and prepare and write down why specifically you want to attend that school. What are your goals in obtaining your MBA, and how will this particular school help or enable you to achieve those goals? This will help you on your essay and prepare you for your interview.
